01 EX: Rattling/Knocking Noise/Sound just above Idle

01 EX: Rattling/Knocking Noise/Sound just above Idle
Hi,
My 01 EX has a rattling/knocking sound around 800 to 900 RPM which is a little over idle for me. This occurs all the time, even if I have my gear engaged.
I have been inquiring around and have learned/heard a few theories and they are:
1) Clearance between valves and pistons
2) heat shield on the catalytic converter and / or exhaust pipe
3) Alternator
Someone please give me some closure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
