Default 1991 honda civic ignition...

hey how's it going,
the site seems pretty cool here, and hopefully i'll gain more expierience in hondas from you guys/gals.

i have a 1991 honda civic dx hatch 5-spd.
she has 173,000 miles on her runs like a champ but there's a small problem.
just recently when you go to start her up.
you go to start she starts up. once you let the key go to on everythings cuts off except the radio and blower motor, don't know bout the other accessories.

but if you hold the in start but back off enough for the starter not to keep running she'll stay on. and if you keep it like that for about 10-20seconds it's fine.
i can drive her to work (20minutes) get there shut the car off, start right back up and it's fine.
till it gets cold.

i'm thinking either main realy, ignition key cylinder...what could it be, and could the problems be repaired>?

thanks

Sounds like a bad ignition switch.

the relay you can take out, open up and resolder it. they are known to crack at the soldering points, and to me it sounds like a bad ignition switch.

The switch is a plastic piece attached to the back of the key cylinder. You don't need to replace the whole cylinder assembly, just the switch.

It isn't causing the problem you have now, but do pull your main relay and re-solder it, otherwise it's very prone to give trouble later.

to remove the ignition switch yea its pretty easy

just take the cover off the steering column
then on the back side of the ignition there is 2 screws, then you unplug it.
