1998 Acura 1.6 EL , having idle issues
Hi...Canadian car, luxury civic basically.
The car has been sitting for over 1 year with a full tank of gas 182,00 KM, driven easy. IM having some real issues with the idle. It will be pretty normal up untill the car is at optimum temperture and then the idle revs up and down frantically( 1000 RPM to 1600). Also if the gas is accelerated at just a very light touch the revs become pulsating like. Drives perfect at speeds above 30 MPH IM thinking, throttle body, TPS, fuel pump or gas filter. I have dropped a little Methal hydrate ito the gas tank and sprayed some carb out into the throttle body. Checked connections to TPS and MAP sensor, and put new gas in it, however only a little as it was almost full. Check engine light is on and will try to get the code for that tomorrow. Any ideas ? my guess is the throttle body, i had a simular problem with my civic, everything u posted sounds exactly the same (frantic rpm) issue ...worked on the throttle body and the cable and never had the problem again...

Go out and buy a can of "Deep Creep" its basically SeaFoam in a spray bomb. That stuff is pretty amazing for cleaning throttle bodies. While you're at it, clean out all the sensors attached to the TB as well. That's a good start right there. In the DIY section, there is a post about how to use seafoam in your car. Follow that, but in this case I would buy 2 cans of Sea Foam. Run one through the throttle body using the tube of your fuel regulator, the other can goes into the tank. And even though the DIY post says it, please do it at night, or away from people. Your car WILL SMOKE LIKE CRAZY! |
I also agree. Clean your Idle Air Controller Valve on the throttle body.

Also, pics of the elusive 1.6 EL? I really want one of those valve covers but can never find them.

Could I just shoot the Seafoam through the air-in-take of the throttle body? When cleaning the sensors should I use a product or just clean the contacts? Thanks |

Yes and the code was 14 if I remember correctly/idle control Swaped out the throttle body for another(wreck) and still had the same problem. Well I had mine out I gave it a good cleaning including the idlle control valve. Reinstalled but no luck. Going to try thermostat next. Tried Seafoam too. The tranny shifts up and down perfectly(auto) so I don't suspect a solonoid problem?? Idle still runs high and revs up and down constantly on about a 2 second cycle. When cold it idles pretty normal Anybody got any ideas?? Thanks |
The thermostat shouldn't have any bearing on the idle.
