2002 civic EX 5 spd. - AC comes on after 1+ hours

2002 civic EX 5 spd. - AC comes on after 1+ hours
I have an 02 civic EX 5 spd. Recently, my AC started giving me problems. It will only blow hot air when the car starts, but starts blowing cold approximately 1 - 2 hours after driving. When it comes on, it is super cold.
can anyone give me suggestions about what this could be?

Need to do a few tests first. Start the car cold (so you know it will not work), turn the fan on low and press the A/C button and observe closely what happens:
Does the light in the button come on?
Do the fans under the hood start?
Does the engine idle speed increase?
