Question 2002 Civic transmission and rpm problem?

I don't know much about vehicles in general so you're going to have to bear with me. The problem that is happening is when I reach a high rpm in any of my gears (its a manual forgot that) the car seems to jump and the rpms fluctuate up and down repeatedly or they just drop. My transmission light on my dashboard is on currently and I'm trying to stay in low or normal rpms as much as possible. Is it the transmission slipping? Do I need more fluid or something?

Pull the transmission code and post it.

A manual that has a "transmission light?"

For 96-00 Civics, the D4 light will remain on or blink if a transmission code is thrown. Maybe 7th generation Civics are similar.

I'll post up a picture later, I think its the engine light, I gotta look at the owners manual and tell you what it actually is. Also when I get to 4000 rpms is when it starts "jumping". It feels as if I'm tapping on the gas repeatedly but I'm not.

Your clutch is slipping. These are not great transmissions, could be a simple clutch plate replacement or the start of much more.

Misfiring at high rpm, heavy throttle is typically a case of starving for fuel, such as a clogged fuel filter. Since you have a CEL on the first thing to do is check the code for any clues to the situation.

Slipping clutch, at some point the clutch will break free and the engine will rev up (possibly to the redline) but the car doesn't go proportionally faster like it should. The action is relatively smooth, no jerking, etc. This doesn't sound like your situation.

The did happen to me the other day. All of a sudden while I was in fourth gear it just revved like crazy so I quickly threw it into neutral. I went back into fourth and all was well. The symbol is the same as RonJ's profile picture. Should I just bring it into the shop to get it checked out orrr?

Take your car to an auto parts store that pulls CEL codes with a scan tool free of charge.
