Default '91 CRX headswap/starting questions!

ok, i figure i'll just start with everything i can think of to tell you about my car. It is a 1991 CRX Si with a low(ish) miles D16A6 block fitted to a "refreshed" D16Z6 head, and the distributor from the same (Z6) engine. I know that the block is good, i was driving it stock for about 4,000mi. in the CRX. Thehead and distributor came from my trusty old 1993 civic EX I totaled, sad face. The wiring for the Distributor was swapped over to the Z6 plugs, no big deal, right? I made my own automatic Vtec switch using a potentometer, a few and gates, and a very low level input latch relay. This is all hooked up to the signal going to the tach, which i amplified and split. I know it works, i've used one ona friend's car with VERY similar "mini-me" swap. Everything else mechanically is stock, save intake, exhaust/headers. nothing special there... anyways, off to where my problem comes in! The car finally started running when i switched the distributor over to the Z6 from the A6. The car only went up to 3K RPMs, then it bogged out, if you let it go down to about 2950, then held steady there, you were perfectly fine. the check engine light was on, and the car started like ****, and barely at all when it was cold. now my car won't start at all... wtf? i changed nothing!!! has good compression, spark, and i'm pretty sure the fuel delivery is alright, unburnt exhaust (when trying to start) smells like gas. that should be about it, anybody know what the F is wrong with my REX?

EDIT

Here's how you would retrieve the CEL code for a Civic:

http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread/1901557

If the method is different for a CRX, perhaps you can have the code pulled at your local auto parts store or borrow a scan tool from a friend. The code may provide an insight into your problem.

Also, are both the timing and timing belt fine? Might you have developed an intake air leak?
