Does the starter fail to crank the engine or does it crank fine but the engine won't start?

Have you listened for whether the fuel pump primes for 2 seconds (low humming noise in rear) when the key is turned to ON(II)?

Have you checked for spark at all four plugs? Click Spark link in my signature.

Does the CEL remain on steady when the key is turned to ON(II)? Or does it turn on and then off after 2 seconds?

Was spark bright white at the plugs?

Pull the CEL code as detailed at the CEL link in my signature.

Also check the mechanical timing to see whether the timing belt skipped a tooth or two:

CEL stays on usually is a main relay problem. It should come on and then go out. Check for spark, if no spark you could have a dead ECU or major power / ground problem. Check the ground wires on the thermostat housing.
