Default New (to me) 96 Civic barely passed smog!

Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and new to Civics. I just picked up a '96 Coupe D16Y8.

The smog tech told me I was borderline fail on NOx. He said I'd need a new cat soon and a tune up was probably in order. What should I check/replace to get it in spec? I though it might be primarily due to a bad EGR valve but i hear this model doesn't have one.

What were the other numbers? If HC and CO were supprisingly low, could be running lean. If all the numbers are high most likely bad cat.

Looks like the engine is running lean. Any CEL codes? If not, start by replacing the fuel filter. Also check the ignition timing.

No codes. I'll check the timing. Fuel filter's on it's way. Good idea to check fuel pressure?
