Default 95 civic ex (multiple issues)

I have a 95 Civic Ex. The problems are...
1) The engine light is on and I don't know what to check for or where to look?
2) The speedometer and mileage doesn't work, but the VSS appears to be plugged in, so what else couldbe the cause of that? Should I replace the speedometer cable or the whole speedometer itself?

Thats all that I can remember at this moment. Any info can help. Thanks in advance.

when i bought my 94 ex off of my buddy he actualy had just changed the spedometer the morning that i test drove it so that is a very likely possibillity

is the check engine light effecting your driving? if not just take it to a local autozone and they run tests on CELs for free

Sounds like your speed sensor is out.

There is no cable to the speedo, it's electronic. The pulses from the VSS drive both the ECU and the speedometer / odometer. If you have the VSS code in the ECU, replace that sensor and that should turn the light out too.

Thanks for the help. The engine light isn't effecting my driving, I just didn't want to destroy or break something because of ignoring it.

The speed sensor had oil on and around it. I cleaned it off hoping that it would fix it but no luck. Its not corroded. Which part should I try to replace first? Which one will cost less money? Oh and is there a fuse that goes to speedometer?

I went to a junkyard and got a speed sensor off a 92 civic and put it on my car and now my speedometer works fine.
