96 civic SI (canadian)-check engine light on
hello there, i have a 96 civic si (canadian), the check engine light came on yesterday, and now the speedo doesn't work, the tach, temp and gas gauge all work.
I haven't started to look at things yet (fuse, etc), i wanted to ask first.
anyone else see this before?
thanks

Check whether fuse 15 is blown in the under-dash fuse/relay box.
Also might be a faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
Pull the CEL code from the ECU:

so i tried the plug loop from the link provided and the check engine light did not flash, I cut a little piece of speaker wire and connected it to the one hole and the other end to the other hole.
did i do something wrong?

i connected the jumper, ignition off, light did not come on. turn the key on, light came on and stayed on, by the way my SRS light is now on!! (this is probably because I disconnected all the connectors from the ecu (will fix this later).

You may have inadvertently cleared the CEL code from the ECU by disconnecting it. Run the car until the CEL returns and then try retrieving it again.

Either the jumper wire is not making good electrical contacts or you have a problem with the ECU. Remove the jumper wire from the service connector. Clear the ECU by (1) turning the ignition key OFF, (2) removing the 7.5 A BACKUP fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box for ten seconds, and then (3) reinserting it. Turn the ignition key to ON without cranking engine. The CEL should light for ~2-3 seconds and then turn OFF. If not, you may have a faulty ECU.

When the CEL relights, retrieve the CEL code using the jumper wire. Make sure the wire is making good electrical contact and that you are connecting it to the 2P service connector attached to the main wire harness near the ECU. I've successfully used a jumper wire like you did, but others use a paper clip.
