Default 97 civic hatch charging problems

Hi Just new to this!!!!
1997 DX civic hatch.
sat in my car for ten mins with my lights on and car off. tried to start car, car wont start. got a boost. car ran for 5 mins then died. i also had battery light on. went to parts store and bought me a new battery. installed it and that battery light is still on. ideas what is going on? did i mess something up? Someone tells me that new battery is gonna die too!!! Help please and thanjks

Your alternator is not working. The "battery" light is controlled by the alternator and indicates a problem with it which will lead to the battery running down. Before replacing the alternator, check that the belt is intact and also check fuse 15 under the dash, which powers up the alternator.
