Default 97 honda civic dying

hello. i have a 97 honda civic. as of recently the transmission light has been staying on. the car seems to be running fine, however, when i come to a stop in first and put the clutch in, the car want to start shaking and die on on me. it immediately starts back up when i crank it after this happens. this doesnt happen all the time, however, the car shakes slightly when shifting. can someone give me an idea as to whats goin on. thanks.

Automatic or 5 speed? How many miles are on the transmission and has anything changed or been worked on recently since these things have happened?
