98 Civic EX Fuel pump relay?
I keep blowing the 15 amp fuse under the hood. When I replace it it will last a few seconds or a couple of minutes. Would the fuel pump relay behind the glove box be causing this? I had to wrap a peice of wire around a fuse to get the car home. I know this is bad to do and I'm wanting to correct the issue the right way.
Drove to auto parts store to get a testing light and fuses. When I turn key to two position I can hear the fuel pump priming and the relay behind glovebox click after a few seconds. Not sure how helpful this information will be. Going to run in and grab some fuses to see of it keeps blowing them.
Ok. Replaced the fuse and it has stop blowing them so far. Drive for about ten minutes without it blowing. Now the car is acting like it may have a bad ground and it sputter sometimes and the and re check engine like flickers and I can here the relay resetting. Like I just turned the key on. It does it at random times but worse when I try speeding up to pass someone. Just pulled up at house. Going to move and shake wires checking for bad ground.
moved and shook all wires on the harness that I could see while car was running and it didn't sputter once. Checked grounds that I unbolted last week when doing repairs and wiggled the wires and made sure bolt was tight. Not one sputter. Taking out for drive and will update when I get back.
Now I'm more confused then ever. 20 minute drive and not one issue. Hard to fix something that isn't acting up. Doubting how much I trust it for my 600 mile trip next weekend. Would hate to end up stranded on a back road in Alabama.
Nay be more than one problem. Bad ignition switches cause the engine to cut out. The grounds on the thermostat housing are critical.
None of this will blow the fuse though, so I'm still thinking a short. Carry spare fuses, lots of them. You can see some of the pump wiring by removing the bottom cushion of the back seat. Look for any aftermarket anti-theft measures, a lot of them work by cutting into the fuel pump wiring.
