Default 98 civic LX dead temp gauge

Hi guys and gals, I am getting a really great deal on a 98 civic LX. the only problem is that it has a dead temp gauge. everything else seems to work fine except for the temp gauge. I have driven the car (for maybe 10 km) at speeds up to 120 kms/h with no problem. so i dont think the car is actually overheating. I just wanted to know what could be the cause of this problem, and the solution. I don't want to get ripped off!!

The signal for the dash temp gauge comes from the 1-wire ECT sending unit located below the distributor (see diagram). Check whether the connector for the sending unit is unplugged or damaged. Otherwise, the wire running between the sending unit and the dash gauge or the dash gauge itself might be bad.
