Default 99 civic maintance required indicator question...

well what it says..
my 99civic EX SOHC maintance required indicator is now red instead of green when i bought the car...

my question is why does this change colors for? i know red is bad...LOL

it seemed to have just changed..
im assuming the timing belt... BUT it seemed to have changed right at the oils 3K mile sticker on the windshield BUT i changed it about 1Kmiles ago just to be sure i used the good stuff..... im curious when you change the oil do you have to clear that indicator.... OR does it only come on the major milage recomended changes like the timing belt?

i was going to buy anew timing belt and other ACCes to do it all at once... BUT went to the tire shop to get my rear tires ballanced and my bent rim switched to the rear and half way thru the guy noticed some bubbles on the sides of the tires that came with the rims...... so unfortunatly i HAD TO replace the rear tires... but luckely he at least cut me a little beter deal... and instead of the original 238 for the front tires he only charged me 195bucks. so that was a HUGE help with my wallet.... BUT unfortunatly only 50bucks in my bank account till NEXT pay check... and i just got paid today SUCKS......
that was a real unexpected situation! that definatly needed attention! dont wanna have a blow out and totaly trash my rims!!!!!! or even cause a accident!
and he cut me a deal on the tires so i couldnt pass it up.....

BUT now i have to wait till next week till i can HOPEFULLY get enough cash to buy all the needbie stuff to replace the timing belt....

this will be the first time realy tearing into my civic.... i baded alittle in my old 84 and 86crx but it was a real old turd... worst problem i had was a bad carb and those vac lines are a pain!

im confident i can do the work! but like always.... the first time will be a task....

BUT ANYWAYS.... does anyone know how often or reasons that this indiactor would go red?

thiers a picture of the gauges when i bought the car. and now my milage is almost at 92K miles
and the milage sticker on the windshield said like 91K miles until oil change but i changed oil at 90K miles just to be safe...... IM HOPING the indicator goes red every 3K miles for oil changes.... but im not sure...
SOMEONE PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!!!!! i am kinda concered about this issue.....

whoa! those are some pictures.

we had posts about those lights since i have been here. do you have the owner's manual.
i would also like to know - do not have them on my 88. it should be covered in the owners manual.

i have an 83 audi that has that, and when it comes on it is time to replace the oxygen sensor. and there is some little lever (or something) to push to reset it. don't know for your honda, though.

do you know when the timing belt was replaced ??
i posted info that i found somewhere on the net about when to replace the timing belt.
it is in one of my posts over here:

ya ive searched for info on the maintance required indicator BUT couldnt find anything!

i searched thru my HAYNES manual... but i cannt find anything about it just searching... tells me how to clear it BUT i dont wanna know how to clear it i wanna know WHY it charges color to red which is bad i know......

i just dont know if its from the oil change..... or the timing belt needs changed...

i just bought the car at 88K miles so i have NO CLUE what condition the belt is in or if its ever been changed to tell the truth.....
i dont plan on tearing into the motor until my painted valve cover is ready....

Its just an indicator to get you to come back into the stealership and have a routine check run on your car. If you are unsure about the timing belt, I would have that checked, as you're getting close to the point where those begin to become weak...

Of if you want to risk valve desimation and just pretend you never saw the light, you can just reset it back to green.

ya im just hopeing someone knows for a fact what the indiactor comes on for.... could it be the oil every 3K miles or the timing belt and it just finaly moved over into red after another 2K miles past the 90K mile mark.

ya im gonna replace it..... before this year is over for sure... depending on how my money situation goes.... but it will be done this year FOR SURE!

ill inspect the belt when i change the valve cover. its had 3 owners before me so MAYBE they already had it done...

its also been in 2-3accidents.... 2 from carfax and the third might have just been crapy driving... but i know its had work done to both doors and the front of the car.
replaced hood, and bondo, paint on the doors inside guts. i know for sure! but the front doesnt look damaged so at LEAST it looks like they did a good job on the repair!

bmw's have a service indicator, they display green, amber and eventually a red light.
the most common way to cancel these on indicators (on 90% of cars) is to hold down the trip button on the dash and turn the key to position 2 - keep the button held down til the indicator starts flashing or just disappears
this may not work for civics (didn't even know they had it!)

that lite is set to come on every 7.5k miles ,, it is a reminder for car owners that car is due for a scheduled service.. 15k, 22.5k, 30k, 37.5 k etc etc .. service vary on the mileage that you have ,some services are called minor service,, oil change, tire rotation, clean + adjust brakes .....major service require plugs, valve adjustment fuel filter, air filter tranny fuid etc etc ..
Another way for Honda to get you into the shop ...
