Default AC Works intermittently - WTF

Hello, first post time! n00b

I drive a 1994 Civic EX coupe with about 105,000 miles on it. I recently had the AC charged. I have been having an incredibly hard time with the AC, which sucks because I only bought the car because my other beater didn't have AC.

Anyway, the AC works like a charm every morning. As the day progresses, it stops working. The compressor just turns off and will not turn back on. It always works the next day like a charm, however, and blows ice cold. This usually happens in heavy traffic or on my way home from work. Sometimes I can trick it by turning the AC on and off (pressing the button on the "climate control"). Other times I can trick it by pressing the AC button and just holding it in while I drive. Either way is unacceptable, as eventually nothing works and I am dying of heat.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe something heats up during the day and causes the compressor or whatever to turn off. If the car is idling and you press the button nothing happens. When the compressor does decide to show up for work, it is perfect though.

Any ideas?

it clould be a few different things

first off chk the a/c clutch gap,, if it is too wide , when it heats up the coil will not be able to suck it is and engage the a/c clutch ,, specs should be .012-.024 ,,
try the quick test, when a/c is not working, get a big screwdriver and push on the a/c clutch inward carefully.....if it engages clutch gap is too wide ,, remove the shim ( s)

also chk to make sure you get power to the thermo protector ,, it sits on top of the compressor,, chk and make sure that you got power going in and going out..if power going in but not out you got a bad switch

and i have also seen the a/c thermostatic switch, located in the evaporator take a dump when it heats up

and finally it could be a bad realy ........

you need to DIAGNOSE.
