Default Air Conditioning

I have a 95 civic and the fan works just fine but when I press the AC button, it usually starts squealing. Sometimes it won't squeal and sometimes it will. Most of the time it does though. Could the belt be too tight? I'd like to try to fix it myself if I can. I'll just need a little assistance haha.

More likely, the compressor belt is too loose. Sometimes it is also the alternator belt, though in that case you usually also hear squealing upon starting the engine.

Also check that the condenser fan works. When the condenser overheats due to the fan not running, you have excessive pressure leading to belt squealing, compressor cycling on and off, and poor cooling.

yea my windows work fine but a little AC would be nice here and there lol. I wish I knew how to adjust the belt, I don't even know which pulley is which.

The compressor is on the front of the engine at the bottom. The compressor belt goes over a small idler pulley in between the compressor and the engine which is how you adjust the tension. Loosen (do not remove) the nut in the center of the idler pulley. Then find the jack screw above the idler pulley. Using either an end wrench or a 1/4 inch drive socket with a long extension, turn the jack screw clockwise to tignten the belt. Then tighten the nut on the idler again.
