Alternator belt squeal on 99 civic EX
Hey guys real quick I drive a 1999 civic Ex (Canadian Si) and about 2-3 weeks ago my alternator stopped working so I switched it out for one I had from my old 97 ex (part numbers and dimensions all matched up) and I started and has been going perfect. But today on my way to McDonald’s my battery light started coming on, battery was fine. Got back in and started it and heard a slight squeal. Drove back home (about 10 min in town) and half way the CEL came on and the car started getting jumpy or like it would lose power for a second. When I got home I tightened up the top alternator bolt figuring that’s what was the problem, now when I start it up it has a really high squeal that just gets louder. Belt has slight wear but no more than a week ago. Please help I need to get to work tomorrow.
UPDATE: went and sprayed down the alternator belt while it was running (loud as hell) and the squeal disappeared. Was told by a friend that it’s either a bad belt(very likely having driven it 10 min while very loose) or a bad pulley/bearing. Could anyone verify this or know a good, quick way to check alignments of the pulleys/bearings, any help is appreciated.
UPDATE: changed out all the belts Not including timing belt, and fixed it up. No more squeal, and cleared the CEL (was throwing code P0505 Idle control system) will have to wait and see over the next few days if it comes back.
