Default Briefly Inaccurate Speedo Reading

This morning when I got on the road I noticed my speedo seemed off. Judging by where my RPMs usually are, I had to drive around 40MPH to get the speedo up to ~29MPH. Then, I was going 55MPH like everyone around me, and the RPMs were where they usually are, but the speedo was reading 40-45MPH. To confirm this problem, I turned my turbo timer to speedometer display and I was right, the cluster speedometer was way off.

It's never done this before.

I got in the car after class and drove home and the speedo was normal again.

Any ideas with what was going on?

Check whether the VSS connector is clean and tightly coupled.

Got a diagram? I'm not sure which one it is.

Also, I don't think that's the problem because my turbo timer has a speedometer readout and it's tapped into the speedo wire behind the cluster, and it was still reading normally.

That's an excellent point. Maybe the speedo itself was malfunctioning.

If it doesn't happen again should I just forget about it?

That's what I would do.

Okay cool. I've driven a few more short trips and not had another problem so far.

When my cluster was going out, the speedo would work for awhile and then shut off completely. It would randomly come on and off while my Scangauge still registered the speed all the time, so I knew the VSS was working. I ended up swapping the entire cluster out and it never happened again.

it did it again today. ugh

well, i messed up the circuit print on the back pretty bad when i was installing the LEDs into the cluster, so i'm gonna order a new circuit print and try that. if that doesn't fix it, i'll get a used cluster.

i want a new circuit print anyway so i can fix what i messed up.
