Run a shorter belt for what?

I always thought of the crank having three belts - Alternator, P/S, and A/c. I think you can just remove the belt. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I plan on pulling A/C out within the next few months, so I don't have all the knowledge about it.

The compressor does have its own belt. Just leave off the A/C belt entirely, everything else will still work.
