Default Car Dies Out Randomly When Driving - Getting Spark - Wont Start/Shift.

  • Ok my sister has an Automatic 99 Accord Coupe V6 model. The car is completely completely random and will run fine one week/day/month whatever it wants.
    • Problem: car will die in the middle of driving, and my sister is forced to pull over and and try and start it back up, rarely will it start back up within a half hour.
      • When i say it doesn't start I mean it will start up for half a second and die back out.
      • This has been happening for a while now and I experienced it for the first time today when trying to follow her home
  • I did test for spark and spark is there. I could not hear fuel pump priming and I did try and listen many times from inside and outside.

  • Starting today the car decided that when it is not in the mood it will not shift out of Park.
    • So far we have replaced the ignition module which wasn't greased and was faulty. And that wasn't it.
    • CEL is ON but is reading no codes according to my dad and sister.
      • My dad wants to replace the fuel pump next but I said let me make sure HCF doesn't have a clue to help.
  • Any questions you need answered please let me know.

ALSO one last sidenote.
  • Car has a superr touchy and annoying clifford alarm system, idk if this may even have something to do with it, how can I check for a fuel cut off?

for it not wanting to come outta park, check the front brake pads wear, if they are worn it will do that, there is a slot you can put a key in next to the shifter to unlock it and shift,

as for the car dieing sounds like a bad main fuel relay to me, nike jump the ecu yourself and see if there is codes
by annoying touchy alarm you mean its just sensitive right?

doe she ever have any problems trying to start it up before she drives it and it dies?

Ill check brake pads in a few.

This car doesnt have the keyhole for the shifter.

Remove alarm and rewire to stock is your sure cure for annoying aftermarket alarms. If you find the alarm model number you should be able to look up if it has a fuel cut function or not and which wires would be involved.

Take the back seat out (I think it's the same as a Civic) and find the fuel pump wires, check for power and ground there, if you have power and ground yet pump doesn't run-- the pump is bad (or broken circuit inside the tank).

Could also be a bad key switch. If it were a Civic the test there is to make sure the dash lights stay on while trying to start. Best bet is to pull the hand brake up and watch the BRAKE light.

A
fter reading some more I guess the main relay likes to go out on 98-01 accords during the winter or in cold weather, im in colorado and it did start last winter........

The car is being test driven by my dad now hoping it dies out on him so he can retest what I already tested. I found out the fuel pump kicks on and it is also getting spark. He said he has to confirm it but its hard to get the car to die when you want it to.

OKay, changed main relay, it had an aftermarket main relay in there that was impossible to take apart, so got an OEM one and put it in...... Car ran perfect for about a month, than boooooooooooom.... its back. The DAY after my sister paid me for fixing the unfixable problem.

What would you guys suggest next?

Where can I get a list of 99 Accord V6 Recalls? I called honda and they said the car had 3 recalls, all of which have meen taken care of...

One of the recalls was the ignition switch..... from what I have read this switch gets fixed 1 time for free from honda, but it may go out 2-3 times during the life of the car........ could this be the problem?

If it "starts for half a second and dies out", look at the dash lights after it dies, the oil and battery lights should come on. If they aren't on try jiggling the key-- if that makes them come on, bad ignition switch. This is of course assuming it's wired like a Civic.

It will start and die like your saying, battery light blinks, key light blinks, and it also dies in the middle of driving.... like whenever it feels.
