well if your tranny doesnt grind with the motor runing then theres a few things it might be.... first off. if you seperated the motor/tranny you sure you put the clutch in[8D],
2nd check the throw out fork.... make sure it moves freely with the clutch pedal being pressed in and off if it moves back and forth like it should. and you sure you hooked up the 2 shift rods.

if both are good clutch is instaled and clutch fork moves back and forth like it should, and your shifter 2 rods are hooked up to the tranny, and you have your axles in the car then you got a serious problem somewhere inside the tranny.

its probably something super small like you forgot to attach the shifter linkage or something.LOL

The gears should grind when you try to shift to reverse without pushing the clutch. Sounds like a clutch problem. Make sure the lever on the side of the bell housing moves witht the clutch pedal. Might be the wrong clutch disk in there that doesn't engage the splines of the transmission shaft.

Anyway I think you're going to end up taking the transmission out to investigate. While it is out you can test the tranny by engaging different gears with the shifter shaft and turning the input shaft by hand. Watch thru the holes for the CV shafts to see if the output gears move.

i bet its something small like the gear selector linkage...... with it be the rod or both rods not bolted up.
but hell you had it done at a high school.LOL well i dont think you drove the car out so its still there right? have them look over to see what they missed h ooking back up!

Also the first thing to check on a "put it in gear, but car doesn't move" is that the CV axles are both fully seated in the transmission. If it's just an axle problem (and everything else is hooked up properly) the speedometer will indicate a speed when you put it in gear even though the car isn't moving.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking too but I'm not going to pull the axles out of my car to try it.

It's pretty good that they got the engine to start right up but maybe someone else was in charge of putting the clutch together.

true but as long as they instaled the clutch it should grip. never heard of a clutch geting stuck released

but then again ya never know with these high school kids.LOL

in school in my small engine class we had we acted a dam fool!!!!!! hell i had a large riding lawn mower and we purposly screwed up the timing so it would throw flames out the exaust.LOL

gotta be something small! kids just slap things together and think they are done but in REAL LIFE there is always little things that can get easily overlooked or forgoten about.LOL i myself make a list and check everything..... if i was you i would bust out some sockets and check every bolt they could have POSIBLY loosened and make sure its tight!

i myself often do some work and quickly finger tight some bolts and forget to go back over them and torque them down right. luckely most the time i remember to check. but with kids and it not being there car i dont think they care to much. lets face it if they screw soemthing up they dont have to pay for anything or get introuble...
