Default changed vss but speedo and odometer still drop out

I bought a 98 civic ex and found that occasionally the speedometer would drop to zero so I researched and changed the VSS - no problem. Except it still happens. Also I noticed that when it does, the Odometer and trip meter also stop working. This concerns me because now I really don't know how many miles are on this car! What should I check next?

Check the contacts in the VSS plug for corrosion.

Check fuse #15 under the dash*. If the CEL never comes on with any code (especially VSS), it is probably the speeometer head, but first pull the cluster and tighten the 3 screws that hold the speedomter to the printed wiring board. The screws make electrical contact.

Your car is a candidate for the Fuse 15 Problem:
1996 to 2000 model
Varying voltage from alternator (headlights flicker or pulsate)
Speedometer doesn't work
CEL codes for both oxygen sensors, VSS, and purge valve
