Civic automatic with better mileage

I am in the process of buying a new civic LX. I thought a manual transmissiongot better mileage than an automatic,but why does the automatic civic have 40mpg while the manual has only 38mpg?

The manual should be more fuel efficient if driven nicely. Plus, the fuel ecomonys stated are estimates/averages. Check out this site:

I noticed that the final drive ratio is different in the AT and MT LX civics:

Final Drive Ratio-
AT: 4.44:1
MT: 4.29:1

Also, the MT LX is 66 pounds lighter.
