Civic burning excessive fuel. HELP!!
 

Hey guys. I have 96 civic coupe with a D16Y7 that is burning a considerately large amount of fuel. My CEL is on. I pulled the code and it reads a 3 which is MAP sensor. This is the only code that it is giving. My question is does this have anything to do with it using sooo much fuel? Your help would be greatly appreciated!

A bad MAP sensor could definitely cause the fuel problem you describe. Take your car to AutoZone where they will use an OBDII scan tool to retrieve a CEL code with more detailed information. This is a free service. Post the code for more feedback.

Yes. Readings from the MAP sensor are essential for the ECU to compute the proper air/fuel ratio. If the ECU believes the sensor is bad, it will turn on the CEL and default to guessing the ratio with a preset table. This keeps the car running somewhat; the intention is you can drive it to get it repaired. It will not work optimally.

i replaced the map sensor, cel went off but i have another problem, the idle on the car is high.

in order for me to remove the sensor i had to remove the throttle body . i applied silicone when i re installed the TB to make sure there wont be any leaks. i also tried adjusting the idle screw but no luck. any suggestions guys?

i adjusted it as far as it could go both ways. idle still high.

What's the idle speed when the engine is warm? You may have to run the engine for a while for the ECU to relearn the idle speed. Otherwise, look for an intake air leak. Did you reconnect all of the vacuum hoses? You may also want to clean the IACV.

well this model doesn't have a tach. i did reconnect all vacuum hoses. but it never hurts to recheck. i will try running the engine for a while this afternoon. i will also try cleaning the IACV.how long does it take for the ECU to relearn the idle speed?
