Default civic hid headlights

i have a 93 civic si that i recently fitted with hid headlamps. for although the new crystal lens makes it brighter, it seems that other drivers do not quite welcome the extra glare. i have lowered my beam a bit but noticed that when i switch to hi beam, the light just concentrates in front but doesn't really get far like my old halogens.

my carshop says thats the way hid works in that since its already strong in the low beam range, hi isn't so much of an issue anymore. i like the reach of my old halogens but do not like their weak, yellowish hue. is his analysis true or should i increase the vertical adjustment of my lens and risk frowns from other drivers?
