Default Compatible Wheels?!

I have a 97 civic dx hatchback. It has a mere 58K miles and has been babied. About 6 months ago a friend gave me a set of 15inch TSW wheels off of his VW GTI. I took them to the tire shop and they tried them out and said they were fine. Over the course of the next few months I stripped the bearings in the transmission. I had a su****ion it was the wheels but couldn't find anyone to confirm or deny so I left em on cus they sure look pretty. The transmission is starting to make the same noises it was making before. Any ideas? Is it the wheels? I checked compatibility at TSW and it looked like both cars could carry the same tire models. Anyone got some wisdom?

Thanks. Much appreciated.

The closest thing I ever heard are problems with 2004 range rover diesels. Apparently when you add bigger wheels to them they have idle problems.
