Default Coolant problems

I just recently bought a 95 civic dx. It has 98,000 miles on it. I am loosing some coolant somewhere. The temp gauge has gone past the halfway point on two occasions. I have checked the oil and there appears to be no signs of coolant in there. Also while accelerating at times I can hear the coolant from inside the car as if it was draining. I also sometimes smell coolant from inside the car. I did find some weird substance in the radiator. I think it might have been stop leak stuff. It was like a wool texture. I looked in the past posts and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I'm leaning towards head gasket. I plan on doing a compression check as soon as I can. I was also thinking maybe heater core but haven't found the carpet to be wet under the console. Anyone know if the heater core leaks, if it will drain where the a/c drains? Well any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tom

Check your RAD for leaks. As well as all the hoses.

sounds like you might have been topping off the fluid level with water. Signs of that happening are losing water and overheating. because of that, the coolant/water mix is probably not 50/50. u can flush the system and refill is so its properly balanced.

Nope coolant mixture is not the problem here. I'll probably get the system pressurized and look for leaks then. I'll let you guys know what I come up with.

If anyone was wondering my progress on my coolant problem, it turned out just to be air in the system. I was getting good compression on each cylinder and didn't have much pressure leakage in each cylinder. I ruled out a head gasket there. Thanks for all the comments.
