CV axle question - play?
97 HX 211K miles
Passenger side CV axle - I can move the part that goes into the transmission in and out about 1mm. I can't actually pull it out but it does move this 1mm.
Reason I ask is b/c we got the clutch done about 1 month ago, noticed a clunk while backing up from that side. Could be the tie rod. Boots are not ripped. Also, can't move the driver's side like the passenger side - wondering if they did not reseat the axle correctly after completing the clutch replacement.
Thanks

well if it doesnt pop out then i think your fine. but if it does pop out then pull the axle and check the clip on the tip. it might be weak and need to be replaced. but as long as it stays in the tranny i wouldnt worry about it to much....
The axle normally moves like that. It moves out a little until the clip catches it.
If you have any play in a joint, it's bad. Put the transmission in neutral and (assuming the wheels are still on the ground) try to rotate the part at the transmisison. Do you hear the telltale clunking?
Clunking when you move forward and back can also be a bad motor mount, or they didn't rebolt them all securely after the clutch job.
