Take the intake manifolds off and look closely. I think the little extra holes leading from the head to the fuel injectors started in 1999 but it could have been 1998.
The other issue is of course lack of VTEC, which will make the ECU complain if you rev over 5500 rpm. Replacing the ECU with one from a non-VTEC car is a direct solution on an automatic EX, on a manual EX there is the issue of 2-wire vs 3-wire IACV which will require some rewiring. If you can use the same type of IACV then you can keep the intake with its matching head and not have a problem with the extra holes.
