Default e-brake handle swap, 98 civic

Well I was searching around this site and came to the conclusion that the only way to get the stock e-brake handle off a 96-99 civic is to either yank it off or saw it off. I was pretty shocked to see this because I don't want to hurt my car at all. I got this blue carbon fiber e-brake handle off ebay and was wondering if for a fact that this will fit onto the handle after I remove the stock one. Because it would really suck if I went through the trouble of sawing it off and the replacement doesn't fit. It has too little holes on the bottom, 5 inch long, and came with little screws(see attachment).

I dont know of any reason it would not fit. But as for getting the old one off, your gonna have to saw or cut it off. I have never heard of another way to do it.

update: 8:10 I've cutten down to themetal but not from front to back. My idea was to just shave off enough of the handle to slide the blue carbon fiber one onto. I did the top and noticed the metal so now I'm thinking maybe it'll be easier to try to pry it off, no luck yet.

I'll try to post some pics with my phone, it's quite a big mess. Now I really want to get the other one on.

it's really bonded to the metal, won't give at all. This project is the suckiest one I've ever done to my car hope to god I can getit off.

I woulda rolled the dremel out for that, but it looks like your making headway.

Those screws are set screws, they just tighten down to the metal to hold the new one on there. Not sure if you use the existing button or if a new one came with that one you bought.

Either way, it's gonna look better then stock, good luck !

I still can't seperate the plastic handle from the metal part, it's too well bonded together. I'm trying to cut off some plastic underneath it but it's a beotch, I'm really confused as what to do now. I'll post a pic of the mangled mess it is.

update saturday: I finally was able to yank the rest of the excess plastic off around 11:30 AM. Putting the blue carbon fiber one on was a different story...

On the bottom of the metal handle is some metal that juts out. I had to hacksaw that off and grind it down with a dremel (thanks stumasters). After that I put some soap on the new e-brake for lubrication, and lightly tapt it in with a rubber mallet and aplank of wood. Looks good now, would never know what happened under there.

In conclusion: I would probably never saw out an e-brake again, not worth the work. With the right tools it might be an easier job, but in cramped quarters and trying not to damage the rest of your car. Sawing it out is very frustrating.

If your planning on doing this to your civic, I would recommend a small hacksaw, with a strong blade to cut through metal. A dremel to grind down and smooth out the handle. A vacum cleaner, and a lot of patience.
