Default EG rack and pinion

I curbed my 93 and busted the rack and pinion. How involved would it be do replace it myself? Is it feasible for the average weekend mechanic?
The local stealership wants $700 to do it, so I know it's got to be pretty involved. I'm just wondering if I might be able to save some cash.

If they only want $700 it cant be too bad. As long as you have the new parts it shold be easy. Take the old one off, replace it with the new one. Shouldnt be too bad.

If you are handy and have the required replacement parts (as mentioned by Pete), then the job looks doable in a weekend (see pictures here and in my next two posts).

the only thing you are missing is that when you remove the rack from inside the frame member you will have to take off one of the tie rods(inner) in order for the rack to come out... this can be a little difficult because there is a funky washer in there that will need to be bent out and in turn making it possible to un screw the inner tie rod.... you will have to do the same thing for installing... try to get an exploded view of the steering rack to see all the peices and how they go together.
