Default engine check

I posted earlier about my accelerator being hard to to press on a cold start and a loud click when I press down hard, but no one replied. Now I'm getting an engine check light. At first the light would go off if I turned the engine off and back on again, but now it's staying on all the time. Are these two things related? I called a mechanic and discribed what was going on and he said it could be the throttle position sensor is binding the cable, and that might be causing the engine check light to go on. Does this sound correct? If it is this, is it safe to drive the car like this for now? I'm taking it into the shop this week.

Thanks

Yeah its safe to drive. you need to however get it fixed tho. just take it to a garage to get the code checked and inspected. and then get several quotes on who is cheaper to fix it.
