Engine cuts out, after replacing distributor

1994 civic ex 1.6 vtec, automatic...

last week I let my roommate borrow it, she took it to work and when she came back out it wouldn't start... after a bit of research it appeared to be the distributor... So I replaced it, along with the cap and the rotor, and it started up... But now after several minutes of driving the engine will cut out... usually as I leave a stop... Does this sound like something that would happen if I messed up the timing? Which I'm almost certain I did...

do you have a cel?

gvarisano 11-02-2009 04:29 PM

check engine light? no it does not come on... it may come on right after it stalls but is off once i restart it... I'm thinking maybe my main relay could be bad as well? I don't know very much about cars... trying to learn though

well pull the main fuel relay and open it and resolder it then put it back in, its a very simple process, and is common.

so this sounds like a symptom that would occur if the relay were bad then?

okay, i pulled the main relay... not really sure what to look for in terms of damage... does this look normal?

just look very very very good at the soldering points for hair line cracks, if in doubt just solder it a little.

gvarisano 11-04-2009 03:35 PM

ok I will resolder it when i get a chance to go pick up some solder... Though, even after it stalls I can hear the relay click on, fuel pump whirl, and relay click off... And why would it only occur after the car has warmed up? When I first start it, it has been idling around 2k and then after driving for a bit it idles sometimes at 1k and sometimes really low... Today I let it sit idling for 5 to 10 minutes and it stalled. Then would not start. However when I tried again later it started up. Could improper timing cause this problem? or is there anything else I should look for? thanks!

also pull the iacv off and clean it,

okay, I will try that... now that you mention air, I was checking the air filter today (which was for the most part clean) and noticed one of the screws is stripped and not really doing anything... could this be causing a problematic air flow ? sorry if my questions seem dumb, I really have limited knowledge about vehicles but I'm trying get an understanding of their systems...

pic of what your talking about? the way it sounds i dont think it will give you any problems

gvarisano 11-06-2009 02:04 PM

ok.. resoldered main relay, cleaned iacv, it was pretty dirty.... that seemed to calm the rpm needle down a bit but it is still dying when it gets warm... Any ideas? still wondering if improper timing could cause this?

I was also thinking maybe ecu needs to relearn idle because i disconnected battery while replacing distributor... does this sound like a possibility??? anyone have a process for this?

PunisherInOKC 11-06-2009 04:25 PM

Does not sound like a timing issue to me. But if in doubt - have it checked. Your ECU does not need to relearn the idle. It adjusts very quickly.
Check the cap again - see if moisture has found its way in.

gvarisano 11-07-2009 09:36 AM

no moisture... my best guess now is a vacuum leak somewhere... problem is finding the little bastard.

gvarisano 11-07-2009 03:23 PM

could a faulty o2 sensor maybe cause this? thanks for all your help!

gvarisano 11-11-2009 01:42 PM

turns out that pepboys sold me a faulty distributor...
