hi i have a 1997 civic i stoped using the car for 3 months now the engine revs up & down about 3 techs told me its the idle control valve i have no check engine light on i took the idle control valve out cleaned it and no change got one off another car & same promblem checked all the vacum hoses all ok should i spend $230 on a new speed control valve or look for another option??

 

check the TPS and hook up a vacuume gauge anyway just to be sure

 

check your intake mani gasket...that was causing an inconsistent idle for my car..but my car is a 92

 

Run SEAFOAM. It should clear it up a good bit. It did on mine. Turns out though that TPS was going bad as well. But the seafoam made it around 75-90% better. Its cheap too. There is a great DIY on how to do it in the DIY section, I think x2100 wrote it. Good luck.

 

if its not REALLY bad you could just leave it. my 95 sohc is much better better in the warmer weather. That stupid part will fix the problem though. i put it on my dads accord- same thing.

 

i dont know too much about the tps - guess Marty and others could be right on that.
cannot really tell that the vacuum hoses are bad (by looking)
but being a 97, should not need replacing.
i had the problem on an 88, and replaced the vacuum hoses.
it solved the problem but there was also the iacv.

ok i had a freind try the the thing with the gauge no problem with vacume hoses i forgot to say that everytime i leave the car for a couple weeks without use i have to clean out the idle speed control valve and its been like that for the past 3 yrs so i guess its had it

 

i closed mine off and it solved my problem

 

how did you close it off????
