Default Fuel Pump Problem

OK, I was trying to start the car and it wouldn't start. I could here the starter working, but it wasn't turning over. After trying to get it to go, I heard a load whirring coming from behind me, I tried it again and it started right up. I googled it, and it sounds like it might be a fuel pump problem. It said it was under the back seats. I tried to take out the back seat today to vacuum out underneath it. Would that have caused the problem?

Try resoldering the main relay.

Looked at the main relay, that's most likely the problem. It's dusty as hell, and hanging by wires. I can see where it bolts on to the inside of the firewall, does anyone know what size and thread the bolt should be, it might be a good idea to replace that while I'm at it.

EDIT: Just to be sure is this the 1.5inX3in box just above where you rest your left foot when driving an auto?

It'll say "RELAY, MAIN" on the outside of the box. It mounts above the lever that opens the hood. Use a short M6 bolt, the ones you find everywhere on the car that need a 10mm wrench to unscrew.

For now you could leave it hanging by the wires-- next time the car won't start, hit it and see if that fixes it.

Resoldering didn't seem to help. Got a new one from NAPA and I'm going to throw that bad boy in there after school and hope that fixes the problem.

@mk378--I had to do that every once in a while to get it to start, it just didn't help this time.

Put a new one in, didn't work. I tried testing the voltage at the fuel pump, and it read nothing when I tried to crank the engine. I wanted to test the plug at the main relay, but my dad tried testing the voltage on the battery, and it fried the voltmeter. Any ideas?

At this point, the engine cranks but won't start or run, right? If so, check whether fuse 31 (hood), 24, or 18 is blown.

Check the ground wires on the thermostat housing, the whole ECU system grounds there. When you turn the key on but don't try to start, does the CEL come on and then go off?
