Default Gear stuck in park

i have a honda 2002 civic ex.
The gear is stuck in park. I put the key in shift lever releaser and then was able to change gears.

What could be the problem? I have to take it a repair shop tomorrow, so I know upfront what the problem is..

hate to ask, but, brake pedal down? key in ignition in "on" position?

use this as an excuse to not drive an automatic civic.

do you have to put the key in every time to release it? Or is it now working like normal?

Yes the key is in ignition, brake pedals seem to be fine, get pushed in all the way
steering is also not locked.

also, found out that my rear brake lights do not work, read some where that both the problems could be related

Yeah they work off the brakelight switch on the brake pedal. I bet the cruise control doesn't disengage either when you hit the brakes.

I would start by replacing the brake pedal switch
part# is 36750-SMA-003 SWITCH ASSY., STOP & CRUISE (PANASONIC) $5.93
