Headliner 96 hx

I just bought a civic that is missing the headliner. Can someone tell me if there is suppose to be a backer board or does the material adhere directly to the roof?

there is a foam sheet thing between the roof and liner or maybe they sell it already adhered together, i know some places do that so you dont have to mess with it yourself if you have never done it
