Default heat shield on muffler

the heat shield on top of my muffler is rattling, its only being held on by one weld spot the rest have rusted off.
i was wondering how important this was and if i could just cut it off with out hurting anything.

like every one else, i took mine off a long time ago... the only problem I ever had was on a effing hot day sitting in creeping traffic for about 2 hours... and the only thing that happened was a pop can tht I had in my truck burst... so I think you will be ok IMO...
