Default Help, car won't start...

I was just driving down the road and the car quit, it just died, not warning or anything,
When I tried to start it all it did was turn over and never catch.
We pushed it home, my son was steering and had it in 3rd gear, the car blew out a cloud of smoke smelling like a rotten egg from the muffler.
Today we changed the coil, thinking that may have been the cause, but it had no effect, the car still will only turn over and never starts.
The only probs thiw car has had are flikering headlights from time to time, and occaisionally stalling, but starts up in a few minutes.
I am at a loss here as what to try next, my son says it is getting gas but no spark,
Any suggestions?
It is a '88 4 dr.
Thanks so much.

flickering lights
have you changed or checked the alternator?
that could be a good reason why you aren't getting fire.

I've had a similar problem with my '87. It turned out to be the timing belt. You may want to check it...

He checked the fire and fuel, he says its getting both, you can smell the gas,
I will suggest the other things, icm, timing belt. etc.
if the alternator is bad, wouldn't it not turn over?
Sorry if these seme like stupid questions, I am not a mechanic, just trying to get a handle on trying to get this fixed. I also know that this is not a fnacy or souped up car, but its my only car at this time.

I really appreciate the time and trouble it took to ans. my questions.
