My car was making a noise like the one you're describing. I drove with it like that for about 2 weeks and finally it died going down the road and wouldn't start back up. I towed it to a friend's garage and started breaking down the motor. It turned out being completely seized with 2 destroyed rod bearings and a nasty looking crankshaft. I got all of that fixed and within a day, it started making the noise again. Now I'm replacing the lifters and maybe the valves. My motor just decided to take a dump at 165,000 miles. So try checking or replacing the lifters or valves or if you have the time, drop the oil pan and see if there's any metal in it, indicating that something's falling apart in there.

Just make sure you check it out ASAP because I could have saved a few things in my motor that ended up finally seizing if I would have taken a look at it earlier.

Good luck, I'm going to end up spending like $800 on mine. And that's with a friend doing all of the labor. Plus, I've been without a car for the last 6 weeks.
