if you take out the battery box you will see that the harnes from the motor goes in under it that is a great location i used it to run all my stereo wires and my boost controller. just a suggestion there are 3 bolts to get it out after you remove the battery.

be sure to use a resistor if it is not already built in.

if you were attaching a troubleshooting light to the battery - would use 12 volt bulb. think would use 12 volt led.
cannot help with vtec.

ecu on cars is either under the seat or if like my honda it is under the floor below the dash where the passenger's feet would be.

this is what i got for my VTEC light. It has a built in resitor so you just have to worry about grounding and hooking it up to the vtec wire. btw. from your sig i noticed that you have a pre 96 civic. This means that your vtec wire might not be green/yellow. But i'll double check. Furthermore, you'll looking at the wrong place. The Vtec wire would be next to the kick panel not near the speaker. Its next to the ECU.
