Default hesitation in '01 civic when cold

I posted before re: repeated hesitation for the first half mile after first start-up almost, but never stalling. It got worse over time and was doing the same thing with every cold start-up. No codes and dealer is at a loss for the cause. I tried something: after the first hesitation, I pulled over and put the trans in park, shut the engine off and started up. I drove off and no more hesitation. Now, my wife gets in and before moving the car in the AM, she starts, shifts to drive, shifts back to park and turns the engine off. She starts it up again and drives away w/o the hesitation, like shes tricking the car. Anybody have any idea what parts she's "tricking"? Please help!!!
Thanks.
