How much time left for my CV axle?
How long do yall think I have left in my CV axle?
The boot had a crack in it, and when I was installing my suspension I pushed down a little too hard on my rotor and the boot cracked all the way. Now there is grease spray and drops in that area from it flying off everywhere when I drive the car. Its not flowing out or anything, but when I drive I guess it gets enough velocity spinning around to throw some grease out there under the car.
However, I do NOT have any of the other symptoms of a bad CV axle yet - i.e. no clunking, clicking or other funny noises (except my brakes but thats another story...) *knock on wood*
thanks, gonna replace it but I just spent a grand on a new clutch and other little misc things so I need a couple months...

There are zip-on boots that can be put on without removing the axle. Or you could remove the axle and put a new boot on it (about $15), but really if you're going to remove the axle might as well drive until it quits then put a rebuilt one in.
It could last for months if you don't drive thru mud and dust and get dirt in the joint.

That DIY helped some. My friend and I did mine about a month ago. it took us about1.5 days on pretty hard work. if you know what you are doing then it will take you at most 4 hours. it wouldn't have taken us that long to do it but we got a pretty late start on the first day and didn't have the right tools on hand. but it's not that hard of a project. I would just buy the whole axle it's better to do in the long run.

Thanks...its on my list of things to do. I just did my suspension about a month ago, was going to do the axle too then but its the whole time and money thing. I looked at the DIY and I'm pretty sure I can tackle it, only thing that looks like it might be a pain is getting that axle nut off, and pulling/reseating the axle. Other than that doesnt look too bad.
I just started my rotations for school though, and I'm swamped. Honestly, I probably do have an hour and a half, but something seems like it always can go wrong turning a project like that (or my suspension one) into a multi-day affair, gathering up new parts/tools to fix messups. So thats why I'm looking a quick fix, since the axle hasnt bit the dust yet, and then I'll fix later when I get the time.
Ok so 2 last questions regarding the quick fix:
1. Tape to cover the axle boot tear? If I cleaned it up real well, do yall think something like Gorilla tape would work? Or is there a special kind of anything that would temporarily seal that up?
2. Those "zip-tie" boots - where can I get one of those and how much?
thanks

*crying* my car been making a funny noise on the passenger side and it coming form the wheel. i think it my cv axle. i can it in my steering wheel and i can he clicking sometime when i drive but when im insde of the car my friend in the passenger seat say he can feel vibration where huis foot is at and stuff.
Time to make an inspection. If it's the outer joint, you can probably just reach under the car without jacking it up. Put the parking brake on and the transmission in neutral then grab the shaft and shake / twist the shaft. Any play at all in the joint means it's bad.
