I also ask because you have a 1998. I've had a 97 and a 99, and both back doors on both cars busted so it could only open from the inside (unless the stupid child lock is on).

edit: never mind i guess, since it's the front you're having a problem with....
i have this problem, any way to disengage it without tearing **** up?

^ I took it to a place here in ABQ called Bob's lock & key. Dude opened both doors in less than 2 minutes lol. After he got it open I disengaged the child lock and then took the panel off and fixed the handle at home.
