Issues with 2000 Si....?
ok..ive been looking for a car for a while now...everything i find my mom says is either to old....to much...or too many miles....so i think i finally have her convinced on a 2000 Civic Si with 75,000 miles for $9,800.......motor and interior are all pretty much stock...which is what i want so i can make it my own...and the exterior has awesome looking 17 or 16' white rims with an all black paint job and a ridiculous looking hood with 2 scoops(which if i get i will change)...so my question is....if i buy this Si with 75,000 miles....is there anything besides a new timing belt i will be looking at to replace in the near future, is there anyting that usually starts to go bad around this mileage? And would a 2000 Civic Si be a good project for a 16 year old kid?....i plan on building the motor up, and maybe sooner or later a turbo(but that is way down the line) any input good or bad is appreciated...
Thanks
Thanks
Just be careful when you buy it; make sure the engine is a B16A rather than a D16Y7 or Y8. It will be stamped right on the block. Some people take off the EX/DX badges and slap a retarded looking Si badge and tail lightson the back in the hopes that whoever buys the car won't notice that they're not getting what they pay for.
Check the condition of the CV boots on theaxles, and thedrive belts. Check the tires for uneven wear, in case the alignment is off or it got a crappy lowering job. Get down on your back and look at the underside of the car, check for any leaks or greasy areas, and make sure nothing is bent or scraped badly. The brakes might need replacing soon too. Test all the interior functions like AC, power windows, sunroof, locks, heat, lights, etc to make sure they work.
Actually, the best thing to do is take it to a mechanic or the Honda dealerand have it inspected. I did that after I bought my car and they found a number of things you can't just look at to check. Thankfully nothing major. If the guy won't let you take it to a mechanic, then he's probly hiding something.

make a list of all the things you want to look at and ask about before you go see the car. buying a car is exciting and can really make you forget the important things you want to ask. having that list with you will eliminate the possibility of missing something important SO LONG AS YOU REMEMBER TO LOOK AT IT!! I agree with Firehawk, it's worth it to take a car that expensive to a mechanic so that you know what you're getting into.
no seller is going to give you hell for looking at a list of questions and being careful about what you're buying. don't be intimidated by a seller trying to speed up the sale. take your time and do what is necessary to get ahold of a good car. you've made a good choice on the Honda, and the SI is a sick car. it will serve you well as long as you serve it well.

b16 is a great beginner motor.... low tq. like 116ish and decent hp. 170,top end power is good the only thing u wont like is how short the gears are.... take it for a test drive andget on it thru first and second gear, bang shift it and if it grinds tell the car lot (if its where ur lookin) the the syncros in second are bad and try to get them to fix it for free.... look at the motor block just to the left of the exhaust manifold.... it should say b16a if not dont buy it....
just like everyone else is saying, drive it with someone who knows cars and have them help you around the car. 2000 si is a sick car to get and if you do get it then you will be a lucky kid. just dont get caught up in all the gimmicks they are throwing at you.
wow ....thanks a lot guys...i made the mistake of buying my camaro, and having to put money into fixing all kinds of stuff because i 4got to check stuff over...i will deffinately check the block and make a list like you guys said....thank you very much for the help, and i will keep you posted if i get it friday or not
syncros are like keys that are in your tranny they allowyou toshift into gears.... if there worn down you will get a grind when u shift into each gear, each gearhas its own syncro so if it grinds going into 2ed. u need a second gear syncro, 2ed is the most common one to go out in a b16 tranny because how short 1st gear is, but if it grinds tell em' to change all of em' and offer to pay the diff. to get carbon or ITR (integra type-R)syncros, if u dont under stand pm me and ill get more detailed.... good luck
thanks for all the info guys...but i got the carfax history report today.....and it has a rebuilt salvage title..or w/e u call it....so im just not gonna take any chances with this one..lol..thanks tho
