Default Looking for tips on timing belt replacement...

on a D17A2 1.7L SOHC VTEC in an01 Civic EX m/t. The only thing aftermarket performance-wise thatI haveis the intake, so that won't make much of a difference with this I know.
OK, so I am just looking for some advice andtips that you guys may have to share on doing this. This is going to be my first time doing something this major on a honda. I've gone all over the web (google, other forums, yahoo, and even youtube.com) looking for a DIY stickly for a 01 EX. I've got myself a Haynes manual, but I'm just checking to see if anyone has a DIY that they wrote (or maybe a link to one) that they can share with me. Thanks alot guys!

The only tip I can give you is dont do it your self if you dont know what you're doing, timing belt is a big deal and the risks are just too high. Wouldnt want you regreting it if you screw up. Just my opinion though. You are better off doing it in the mechanic anyway you can replace the water pump with it too, costs around 400 dollars, its quite a lot of money but its something vital for the car.

Meh, it's not really that big of a project (compared to something like a turbo, engine overhaul, etc.)
Regular maintanence is something that I am comfortable with, and I was just looking for some friendly advice from others who have done a timing belt and water pump replacement.
I know my way around the engine compartment/car-itself but it was my first time doing this on a honda civic.
Haha, and I know how much it costs going to the mechanic. No thanks, haha.

Well..i have never done it on a SOHC but imagine its easier then a DOHC....just make sure you are at Top dead center before you take off your old timing belt. Don't overtighten the tensioner bolts or it could strip and make your life a living hell (i speak from experience). You probably shoudl replace oil pump and the tensioner. uh....

good luck!

if you have a haynes or chilton you will be fine.

Wow, are you checking at the dealerships??
Cause those prices are way to high, check at a firestone or car-x
However, it depends on your year, trim, etc. i suppose

i considered doing it myself a while back. there is apparently at one step a special tool that honda guys use to undo a huge bolt. the place i went to uses a custom made tool with a huge breaker bar to get it loose. apparently it's on pretty tight. that's the only advice i know others have said. many a tool has been broken as a result of this bolt.

The available downloadable 01 service manual should be used as a second important resource:

http://hondatech.info/downloads/Auto/Manuals/Civic/

Information in this manual will compliment that in your Haynes manual.

The special tool to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt can be purchased at Amazon for about $25:

In addition to following all instructions available in the service manuals, you also need both 18" and 24" breaker bars, a metal pipe to provide additional leverage for the 24" breaker bar, patience, and muscle.
