Default loosing oil

Hey guys my civic is loosing lots of oil like 1qt in like 400 miles and it dosent blow much blue smoke if any. the only thing that it does seem to do is carbon or blow black **** out the tail pipe on a cold startup. I wouldnt figure it is blowing that much by the rings or is there anything else it could be?

i had the exact same problem and i know what your talking about. you see a blkack spray pattern right behind your exhaust? unfortunately i crashed that car before i solved the mystery, but i was leaning more towards the valves not seating right, so as the valve train is lubricated the oil is slipping into the combustion chamber, getting burned with the fuel and then the cat is soaking up the rest. but i cant prove any of it. also i think if its rings you get blue smoke as you mentioned. you can do a compression check, first dry, then add a little oil to the cylinder and check again, if the wett test is higher then your rings are quite possibly faulty.

i would bet money, if you went to a smog check place, your cat fails, as mine did... the pores (for want of a better word) were clogged. im thinking thats where my oil may have ended up.

I dont have to do smog test and by the way my cat is removed! It's oil coming out in the spray pattern like we had mentioned before.

if yer cat is removed then the black smoke is normal. u got raw emissions comin out yer tailpipe. Yer not shooting out motor oil, the black stuff is carbon. all smoke leaves behind a black film. same idea as a bong turnin all black after heavy use. the cat cleans out exhaust before it exits your tailpipe. wihtout it you jus got raw gas smoke, which is black.

I second that. A compression test and leak down test will tell you alot about your engine. Also look at the spark plugs and see if you have oil deposit or residue.

by the way, smoke out of the tail pipe upon start up indicates the valve seals are worn. Thsi would not should up on a compression test or a leak down test, so if everything seems ok after performing those two tests my money would be on valve stem seals.
