Default low oil issues

so i have a 1995 civic with 156k miles. the engine ran fine when i got it, a few months later though the oil light started coming on when i started it up and sometimes when i came to a stop. i ignored it for 2 weeks, and when i checked the oil i found that it was very low, barely touching the dip stick. since then i've had to add about a quart a week (sometimes more). a week ago it suddenly started running a LOT rougher. better after i topped off the oil, but it has lost significant power, especially before it warms up. did i burn out a valve? is it the kind of thing i could replace myself? i only paid $1500 for the car, is it worth fixing the valve, or would i have done other damage?
