low rpm only when ac on
Hey guys...I have a 95 Civic 5 speed. When Icome to a stop with the a/c on therpms will drop almost to nothing and sputter but not die out. Then it will go back up to 1000 and become irregular bouncing between 400 and 1000. Once I turn off the a/c it becomes stable.
My brother in law says I need a tune up. What do you guys think? Its been about a year, maybe alittleover, since I lasthad a one done.
Thanks,
J

i would also put in some seal softener and stop leak, oilin the AC.... might help the seals and bearings......
as well as the tune up if ya think it might be that... tho id just inspect the parts see how good your plugs look...

Hey guys thanks for all your suggestions. Today while in traffic I noticed something else. While at a stop, with the a/c on, the RPM dropped even more when I stepped on the brake. So I tried turning on the headlights and it dropped even more but did not die. Is this an electrical problem? The battery? The alternator?
might be a combo...
engine being drug down by the AC compressor and the engine not turning fast enough for the alt or the alt wont kick in...
i notice with my blower on low speeds at a stop light the engine idle will drop and run alittle ruff but if i turn on the blower to full the engine speeds up alittle and runs smooth....
might just be the computer not telling the engine to speed up alittle...
i dont know how it works.LOL i just know what i hear and see and feel on my civic.

not electrical it just that ac pulls alot of juice, try to put a deep cycle battery in it Im not sure if i can say the name of battery but they come with yellow and red tops?? try adding a grounding kit also, because honda ground systems sucks i think, run a bigger ground on your battery, and the one the goes from your valve cover to your radiator support. also you can run a bigger wire from the altenator to your under the hood fuse box.
well might not need a deep cycle....
and they are optima...
ive got a fullsize battery under my hood... fits with very minor modifications.... 2 snips and a new ground cable and removing one of the positive terminal cable ties... just cause the negative and positive locations are switched.... tho you CAN make it work by just having the battery turned around BUT it looks beter to me when the battery faces forwards.
but thats just me....
check my picture gallery..... its a optima yellow top D34/78
tho if ya dont have any aftermarket electronics to ammount to anything i doubt thats the problem....
tho i would check the battery cables and ground cables... im preat sure your ground cables suck cause they just always do! thiers 3... battery to fender, inner fender to trany, and radiator suport to the front pulley brackets.

I had this problem in my old car. I think your car is in limp mode via a faulty o2 sensor. Do you have a check engine light? If no, it could be burned out. Go to a chain auto store and have them scan for any codes that might pop up and come back to us to report. The scans are free btw.
